Grand Portage Band
The Grand Portage Indian Reservation is located in Cook County near the tip of Minnesota's Arrowhead Region in the extreme northeast part of the state. The community was considered part of the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa, but is not a party to the treaties that group signed. The reservation was established as part of an 1854 treaty. In the 2000 census the reservation had a population of 557, though Minnesota Chippewa Tribe reported in July, 2007, Grand Portage had 1,127 people enrolled with the Band. The land area is 192.686 km² (74.396 sq mi).
The community operates a casino, the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino. The Grand Portage National Monument is located on the reservation and includes a reconstructed trading post that appears much like it did in the 18th century.
In 2000 the 300 acre Grand Portage State Park was returned to the community.
